When Christopher Columbus discovered this beautiful place on November 27th 1492 he said, "this is the most beautiful land that human eyes have ever seen, for its good port, delicious water and plenty wood." On November 30th he corroborated his words: "We saw many populations, fertile lands, all of them worked."
In 1509 the Spanish crown designated Diego Colon viceroy of La Española and Diego Velazquez to conquer, colonize and build villages on the island. When the conquerors came to the paradisaical Cuba they encountered Indian opposition, lead by the chief Hatuey who they burned in Yara, Bayamo.
