Officials from Libya's transitional government have confirmed that Muammar Gaddafi died Thursday during fighting in Surt, the last strong-hold of Gaddafi supporters.
In 1969 Gaddafi lead a coup against King Idris, after which he served in the capacity of Prime Minister but then, in 1972 adopted the title of Leader and Guide of the Revolution. Over time, Gaddafi became known for his eccentricities and criticism by western nations.
Following months of fighting, Gaddafi was forced to relinquish control and go into hiding in late August, 2011.
