Hundreds of activists are being detained in Nepal for protesting against King Gyanendra, defying a ban on protests and marching into the city center.

Seven political parties oppose the King, who assumed absolute power after firing the government in February. Since seizing power he has curbed press freedoms, detained political figures, and imposed temporary emergency powers, steps he claims are aimed at tackling revolution-inspired Maoist rebels.
