50th Anniversary of Ghana Independence

Ghana achieved independence from Great Britain on March 6th, 1957. Named after the Western African Empire of Ghana (750-1036 A.D), it was the first African Colony in the region to receive independence from colonial rule.
Nationalist activity began in the interwar period and intensified after World War II. Kwame Nkrumah emerged as a leading nationalist figure establishing schools, the welfare system and ordering the foundations of new roads and bridges in an attempt to further the prosperity of Ghana.
