The United States war in Afghanistan started in October 2001, in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, and marked the beginning of the "War on Terrorism" campaign. Known as Operation Enduring Freedom the U.S. led war in Afghanistan sought to oust the Taliban and find al-Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden. With the Afghan Northern Alliance providing the majority of forces, the U.S. and fellow NATO members (the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, New Zealand, Italy, and Germany) provided support.
