Tokelau is one of the most isolated communities in the world. A set of small atolls in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, some 500 kilometers north of Samoa, it lacks an airport and only received telephone service for the first time in 1997. Travel to Tokelau is limited to a monthly or bi-monthly cargo ship from Samoa, which brings the supplies, given by New Zealand, that Tokelauans largely subsist off of.
