In mid-February, 2011, following the success of anti-government activists in Tunisia and Egypt, Libyans took to the streets to express displeasure with their government and its leader, Muammar Qaddafi. Though recent political unrest in other North African and Middle-Eastern had been largely non-violent, Qaddafi has used lethal violence in an attempt to stifle his critics.
