Eartha Kitt was born in North, S.C., started her career as a dancer with the Katherine Dunham troupe. Before the age of 20 she had toured worldwide, staying in Paris after a tour and gaining a reputation as a club singer. Returning to Broadway in 1952, she lent her cat-like voice and demeanor to a number of stage and film roles over the next 30 years as well as playing the role of Catwoman on the Batman television series.
