"Sensation" Brooklyn Museum Protest. 1999.
Leonard Freed
On October 2, 1999, the Brooklyn Museum of Art opened an exhibit entitled "Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection. " The controversy surrounding the show revolves around Chris Ofili's "The Holy Virgin Mary", a work depicting a black Madonna with elephant dung on her breast and porno magazine cutouts of genitalia. New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani threatened to pull $7 million a year in city funding from the museum. Catholic groups as well as advocates of the museum turned out in mass on opening day to both protest and support the museum.
