Distro - Spain. Holy Week in Sevilla. B/W. 1996

A. Abbas

SPAIN: SEVILLA
Every year sinister looking hooded penitents celebrate the martyrdom of Jesus of Nazareth.
From Palm Sunday to the "resurrection", "Semana Santa", floats carrying Jesus and Virgin Mary roam the streets,
in an orgy of rituals which appear more pagan than Catholic.
A "corrida de toros", concludes the week. The ritual ressemble those of Ashura, when Shiites celebrate in blood and black the martyrdom of Hassan and Hussein, sons of Ali.
