Archive - Illegal Immigrants in Europe. First step : Malta 

Patrick Zachmann 

Patrick Zachmann has devoted a large part of his photographic and video work to the theme of immigration and Diasporas. His current project documents illegal immigrants fleeing their homelands for Europe, many of whom find themselves trapped on an island, stranded in some kind of "no man’s land". His first step was to visit Malta, where thousands of them still kept on arriving by 2009.

With its 400.000 inhabitants, Malta saw the number of asylum seekers doubled last year. With 9 requests of asylum for every 1000 inhabitants, it was the highest level in Europe (the average is 0.5). More than 2...
