When the Dalai Lama left Tibet in 1959, the then Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, offered to permit him and his followers to establish a "government-in-exile" in Dharamsala, in 1960. Since then, many thousands of Tibetan exiles have settled in the town. Most of them live in McLeod Ganj, (upper Dharamsala) where they established monasteries, temples and schools. The town has become an important destination for tourists and adepts.
During the latest unrest in Tibet many new exiles reached Dharamsala, Martine Franck brings us a report on life in town around this time.
