Iran, Tehran, 2003. In the land of Ayatollah Khomeini, cosmetic surgery is a thriving business. The demand for esthetic procedures surged after the 1979 Revolution, a time in which laws were passed to oblige women of all ages to wear the Hijab, the all-concealing dress cloak. This left the face as the sole canvas for public self-definition, and turned housewives and working women towards cosmetic procedures -as tattooed makeup and colored contact lenses.
