Friday March 19, 2004 Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian and Vice-President Annette Lu have been shot at a rally a day before elections. It is not clear how many shots were fired in the southern city of Tainan but Mr Chen was hit in the stomach and Ms Lu in her right knee. Both were taken to hospital but officials said neither was in a serious condition and added that Mr Chen had urged people to stay calm. Saturday's presidential election will go ahead as planned, officials say.
