In November of 2008 Magnum photographer Thomas Dworzak visited Iran. Shortly before his visit Barack Obama had won the US presidential election. Though the president-elect's message of "change" was directed toward the American public the world sensed that his slogan would help reverse some of the divisive policies of the former administration. The Bush administration had taken a hard stance toward Iran whose president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was confrontational with his own diplomatic rhetoric.
