Bangladesh in Turmoil
The Awami League (AL) coalition has decided not to contest the elections of January 22 and is paralyzing the country with blockades.
Headed by Sheikh Hasina, the orphan daughter of Sheikh Mujib, who led the nation into independence, the AL has for five years organised a virulent opposition to the BNP party run by Khaleda Zia, the widow of ex president General Zia, denouncing its alliance with the islamist party Jamaat Islami and accusing the latter of covering, if not inspiring, many acts of random terror that the country witnessed in 2005.
