Magnum's first weekend Editing Masterclass at NeueHouse will be led by photographers Peter van Agtmael and Eli Reed. Between the two generations, the pair will guide students through the editing process of projects that are almost finished, pushing the narrative thought process and select curation for making the final step to a complete work.
A cooperative of great diversity and distinction owned by its photographer members, Magnum is “a community of thought” whose members produce some of the greatest works of photography and storytelling to date. This Editing Masterclass will focus on story editing. It will give participants guidance from the photographers and review opportunities among peers to strengthen narratives and hone final image selections. Under the tutelage of praised authors van Agtmael and Reed, students will receive feedback to their individual work, instruction in editing methodologies for different outputs, and suggestions for story development from group critiques. There will be no more than 15 students per group, joined by a small number of interested NeueHouse members. Participants will be asked to bring their project’s key materials, like final mock-ups and digital assets to the Masterclass for presentation and accompanying editing work. Each participant will be given a choice of mentor for the Masterclass upon registration, and all efforts will be made to place participants with their first choices.
During this 2-day Masterclass, the program will incorporate the following elements:
• Presentations from the award-winning Magnum photographers on their own project edits
• Individual and group sessions in editing, critique, comparison, and brainstorming
• Story arc, layout, and sequencing discussions
• Informal group meetings with the other groups and instructors
Critiques will take place individually and in groups, structured to encourage confidence-building skills and the ability to effectively communicate about projects and end products. Building community in peer-to-peer feedback and engagement with the photographers, there will be ample time for questions, book signings, and to discuss specific aspects of photography and the industry.

<strong>About the Photographers</strong>
<a href="magnumphotos.com/petervanagtmael"><em>Peter van Agtmael</em></a>
One of the youngest members of Magnum Photos, Peter van Agtmael (b. 1981) is skilled at creating complex and mysterious narratives with his subtle photographs. Since the beginning of 2006, much of van Agtmael's work has focused on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their consequences at home, a personal journey through the United States and the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Van Agtmael graduated from Yale University in 2003 with a degree in History. His book, Disco Night Sept. 11 was on “book of the year” lists in 2014 from the New York Times, Time, Vogue and Mother Jones amongst others. He has won many awards and grants, including the W. Eugene Smith Grant, the ICP Infinity Award, the Edward Murrow award, a Pulitzer Center grant and multiple awards from World Press Photo. He will make time in between editorial assignments and personal work to lead this Magnum Masterclass, a special first with NeueHouse.
<a href="http://www.magnumphotos.com/elireed"><em>Eli Reed</em></a>
Eli Reed (b. 1946) has a knack for getting to the innocuous and off-guard in people, no matter the context. As acclaimed author Paul Theroux writes in his foreward to Reed’s forthcoming retrospective A Long Walk Home, “Eli is a master of depicting the inner life of a person or culture...” Reed studied pictorial illustration at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, graduating in 1969. Reed’s later induction to Magnum was preceded by studies as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, and he currently teaches clinical photography courses at the University of Texas at Austin.
Reed’s work spans from conflict zones to surveys of social issues to portraiture of luminaries in Hollywood and hip-hop. The first African-American member of Magnum, Reed’s book Black in America chronicled the African-American experience from the 1970s through the end of the 1990s, producing iconic images of events like the Crown Heights riots and the Million Man March.
An official photographer on numerous Hollywood productions, Reed is deeply interested in film and the future of multimedia. He has created moving picture works like the documentary Getting Out on gangs in Detroit, and his collaboration with Maya Angelou, Poorest in the Land of Plenty. Informing those, Reed’s special reports in still photography cover Beirut at war in the 1980s - which became the highly acclaimed Beirut, City of Regrets - and the Walled City (Kowloon) in Hong Kong. Reed will lead this Masterclass shortly before celebrating the release of his retrospective at the Leica Gallery, New York.
