During the early weeks of the COVID-19 crisis in the United States, government guidelines stated that anyone showing symptoms should wear face masks and gloves when traveling to seek medical attention. By mid-April, state governments had begun making masks a requirement for entering stores. Since then, the wearing of masks have become so common that in many areas, a person could be ostracized for not covering the lower half of their face.
Food markets are among the few essential businesses allowed to remain open though entry is controlled so as to insure that shoppers can maintain distance from one another. It's now become commonplace to see lengthy lines outside of supermarkets, with shoppers maintaining a minimum of six-feet of distance between them.
Bruce Gilden has explored this new, unusual practice by taking portraits of shoppers outside markets near his Hudson Valley home.
