When Nicolas Maduro came to power in 2013 after the death of Hugo Chavez, Venezuela was already in a devastating political and economic crisis that has spiraled ever since. Corruption and violence rose, and in a climate of extreme insecurity the government, supported by the army, became more and more repressive as the oil industry collapsed, hyperinflation and shortages of basic goods revealed the intensity of the crisis. In this explosive context, Juan Guaido president of the parliament and opposition leader has now proclaimed himself acting president provoking international disagreements and further internal turmoil.
