The Eton Wall Game is a vigorous hybrid of rugby union and football played since 1766 . Played on a strip of ground 5 metres wide and 110 metres long next to a slightly curved brick wall erected in 1717, the game takes place on Ascension day, and is played between a team of "Collegers" (scholarship holders) and a team of "Oppidans" (the rest of the students, who comprise most of the student body). Prior to the Ascention Day game a service in Latin is held at six in the morning on the roof of the Chapel, presided over by the head Chaplain. Opposing teams then file into the Chapel and sit opposite each other heartily singing hyms and psalms until the game which starts at seven in the morning. 2006.
