IRAN. Teheran. "The day I became a woman". 2010.

Newsha Tavakolian

When Iranian girls turn nine years old they celebrate their coming of age. This festivity, known as the 'Jashne Taklif', is organized by the school. They become Muslim women and officially have to start praying daily, wearing the head scarf and refraining from shaking hands with men. This ceremony however is more prevalent in conservative families, villages and smaller cities.
