Night Court, otherwise known as the Lobster Shift, is held from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m., Thursday through Saturday nights, at 100 Centre Street, the Criminal Court building in lower Manhattan. The Lobster Shift began over thirty years ago and saw it’s busiest time in the 1980’s during the peak of the crack epidemic. At that time it ran seven days a week, but the days were reduced in 1989 due to costs and increased efficiency. An average Lobster Shift will see about 75 arraignments, working out to roughly 12,000 cases per year. Usually it is the young lawyers from the District Attorney’s office and lawyers from the legal aid society, working on cases ranging from first-degree murder to public urination.
