Jovanotti

Lorenzo Cherubini (Italy, 1966) better known to the music world as Jovanotti, made his debut on the Italian Radio Deejay and Deejay Television at the age of 19. He then started his recording career, receiving critical acclaim for the single 'Gimme Five' and with his first album 'Jovanotti for President': an album that successfully fused American rap with Italian melody. With the album 'La Mia Moto', which took him to the Sanremo Song Festival in 1989, the response from the critics was mixed, but his popularity in Italy became wide spread. He then took time out to reflect on his success and to grow professionally and musically.

In 1992, after the release of a single dedicated to the Italian judge Giovanni Falcone murdered by the Italian mafia in 1991 and a new album 'Una Tribù Che Balla', the critics Jovanotti as a true artist, particularly in light of his political and social concerns. Musically his sound matured, incorporating a more urban sound while maintaining the ability to experiment with new rhythms and melodies. 'Lorenzo 1994' introduced Jovanotti to a foreign audience, especially in Europe and South America, and in 1996 he was nominated for the best European Video at the American MTV Awards.

'Il Quinto Mondo' (The Fifth World) is his latest album (2002), includes renowned musicians such as Carlinhos Brown, and was launched by Jovanotti with a long (and often controversial) marathon of television appearances, which provided material for the records video. The music is a colourful patchwork of different sounds and styles, while lyrically the themes have been written with a wider and perhaps more critical view of the world than expressed on previous albums, in particular, man's limitations and his struggle to relate to both nature and technology.
