Alex Webb 

East London, notorious in the 19th century for crime, poverty, and pollution, has long been a haven for immigrants. As early as the 17th century Huguenot exiles settled in East London. They were later followed by Irish weavers and Ashkenazi Jews. In the 1950's and 1960's the area experienced a large infusion of Bangladeshis. Since then numerous other immigrant groups have settled there: Turks, West Indians, West Africans, Poles, Russians, Pakistanis, East Indians, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Laotians. Now East London also has a vibrant alternative youth art scene, with young people from all over Europe living communally in lofts and squats. Especially with the Olympics being held in London in the summer of 2012, the area is being increasingly gentrified. These photographs begin to explore some of the worlds of East London.
