POLAND. Kalwaria village. Pilgrimage.

Bruno Barbey

During the Easter Holy week, an annual Catholic pilgrimage takes place to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska village; at the Carpates mountains, southwest of the city of Cracow. The inhabitans of this community recreate the 'Passions of the Christ' according to the evangelical of St Mathew. Dressed in costumes reminiscent of the time, they walk through the streets chanting stopping along the crouse at the 'stations of the Cross' composed of 42 small chapels which are linked by small paths. The route is designed in accordance with the streets maps of the old city of Jerusalem. In fact a lot of the chapels are miniature copies of some of the Jerusalem buildings. This pilgrimage was first started in 1609.
