SUDAN. Dinka and Nuer Tribes. 1949.

George Rodger

These images were taken at a gathering of the Dinka tribes at Duk Fadiat on the Nile, south of Malakal in Southern Sudan. They are the largest and better known of the Nilotic tribes, and inhabit the swampy grounds close to the river. Their characteristic dancing is a series of vertical jumps with the body held rigid and propelled a metre or so in the air by a flick of the ankles.
