The Emirate of Transjordan was an independent state under military and financial control of Great Britain. The Arab Legion, trained and supervised by British officers, was under the orders of the Emir Abdullah ibn HUSSEIN, who took the throne in 1926. Opposed by the Palestinian Arabs post-second world war, he was assasinated in July 1951 for suspected collusion with the new Israeli state, as he was the only Arab leader to accept the UN partition of Palestine, though he later, under pressure from other Arab states, led his British-trained army against Israel capturing the West Bank, until re-capture during the Six Day War in 1967. Emir Abdullah ibn HUSSEIN was the grandfather of King HUSSEIN I (1932 - ) who became king in 1952.

The Camel Corps or Desert Patrol Force of the Arab Legion, was founded by the British in 1930 as a means to stop inter-tribal conflict. They were the most colourful of the Arab Legion and were often called "Glubb's Girls", because of their long hair and riding skirts and after their commanding officer, British general John BAGOT-GLUBB , better known as Glubb Pasha, Chief of the General Staff of the Arab Legion.
