FTAA (World Summit Free Trade Agreement for the Americas. April 20-22, 2001. Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.)

On April 20-22, hundreds of delegates from 34 countries met in Quebec City Canada to expand NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) to include all of North, Central, and South America. The FTAA agreement was negotiated in secret behind 3.8 kilometers of mesh chain link fence that has been constructed by the Jean Cretien government to keep out protesters. Up to 60,000 protesters came to show their disapproval of the Summit. Although most were peaceful, between 1000 and 2000 had come to
symbolically tear down the wall, which they felt, was keeping the population from participating. Some threw stones at police. The Quebec Police and RCMP riot police met them with tear gas, billyclubs and arrests. All protesters in proximity of the wall, whether peaceful or not, were met with the same force and method.
