Gilles Peress 

On June 6, 1982, after a series of cross-border attacks on its civilians, Israel invaded southern Lebanon to counter the growing position of the PLO in the country. Facing no resistance from the Lebanese people, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) advanced rapidly as PLO forces split into small, roving bands of guerillas. Within a week, the Israelis encircled Beirut, trapping large numbers of PLO forces including Yasser Arafat. After 70 days of Iraeli bombing of Beirut, Lebanese leaders petitioned Arafat and the PLO to leave the city. Through negotiations with U.S.Ambassador Philip Habib, Arafat arranged for a PLO evacuation under the protection of multinational forces. On August 21, 350 French troops arrived in the city and were joined by more forces on August 26, including 800 U.S. Marines. The Palestinian exodus ended on September 1. Approximately 8,000 Palestinian guerrillas, 2,600 PLA regulars, and 3,600 Syrian troops had been evacuated from West Beirut.
