Mumia ABU-JAMAL is an African-American journalist on deathrow in Pennsylvania. JAMAL was shot by a police officer when he intervened in a street incident involving his brother, another man, and the police officer. He survived the shooting, and was charged with the murder of the officer, who was killed in the incident. No one else was charged. The prosecution demanded the death sentence based on his political beliefs. He was sentenced to death in 1982.
Mumia ABU-JUAMAL is the only political prisoner facing the death penalty in the United States. His threatened execution has been condemed by political and cultural figures internationally. An international movement to grant him a fair trial is raising questions about the arbitrariness of the death penalty in the minds of millions.

On October 13,1999, Pennsylvania Governor RIDGE signed a new death warrant against Mumia ABU-JAMAL.
