GERMANY. 1947. "Backyard Bucket economy".

David Seymour

Frankfurt. Frau Elsa WANDERER is more than 60. She is a farmer with a difference. Her tomatoe farm is in the heart of the city, amidst the war rubble along Neue Kraemer Strasse. Here were her two plots of land and two houses before the war, now it is rubble, yet she decided to be her own farmer. She found cans and containers, brought soil back from the country in which to plant her vegetable patch, and horse manure to fertilise it. The water she handcarried in buckets, her home had no pipes. At the end of her first year she grew 500 lbs of tomatoes, tobacco, lettuce and some onions. Some she exchanged for bread, this personal economy is based on an 'unofficial currency' a bartering method. Pieter MIETKE, former Wiesbaden Courthouse janitor, and soldier, went into the tobacco business. He farms "tobacco" in the backyard of the courthouse against the prison wall. The economically depressed Germans learn to how to survive on a "bucket economy"......
