TANZANIA. Tanganyika. Bagoyangi Snake Dance. 1948.
George Rodger
Amongst the Wasukuma tribesmen of Tanganyika, is a secret society of snake worshippers called the Bagoyangi who meet annually to hold the annual 'mbina', snake dance. It takes place in a natural amphitheatre on a hillside and the Wakasuma people gather far and wide, dressed in their ceremonial best, for the occassion. The dancers wear monkey-skins, beaded aprons and strings of cowrie shells. Bells stitched to leather thongs around their ankles rattle with very step.
