On the 26th July 1956 President Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal Company, the Americans and British having withdrawn their financial help in the building of the Assuan Dam and having purchased arms from the Soviet Union, the Western Powers decided to pull out their funding. In return Pres Nasser nationalised and blocked the Suez Canal, causing an international conflict.
