ALBANIA. Uprising.
Alex Majoli
The only real victor in the Albanian uprising of March/April 1997 has been the Kalashnikov. The weapons scattered all over the country have given rise to a new name for children born during this turbulent time - Kalash. Their parents hope that the children born during the these months will live in a revitalised country, one which is free and democratic.
In the meantime, the power of the Kalashnikov still holds sway as a mluti-national peace-keeping force patrols the country. Elections are scheduled for 29th June 1997, and Fatos Nanos, leader of the Socialist Party is tipped to take the presidency from the despised Sali Berisha .
