Immediately after the January 1992 signing of the peace accords, FMLN guerillas were confined to makeshift camps and government soldiers to their barracks. The mechanics were overseen by UN Peacekeeping Forces. Civilians in the war zone continued to build their lives hoping that peace would bring equity. Poverty remained a visible symptom of El Salvador's history.
