After World War II, Sukarno, founder of the Indonesian Nationalist Party, declared the independence of Indonesia and became the first president of the New Republic (1945). He had to fight the Dutch again. The revolution lasted more than 4 years, at the end of which an Indonesian Republic was declared on 27th december 1949.
