In October 2001, the university town of St Andrews will become home to the future King of England. The ancient capital of Scotland is famous for its history (the first Divinity College in Britain was here, challenging Oxford and Cambridge as being the oldest university towns) and golf (the town is home to the world's oldest surviving golf course.). Prince William will join approx. 5000 students enrolled in the University, having achieved the grades to study an MA hons degree in Art History (one of its best reputed courses). St Andrews University has seen by far the biggest increase in applications for degree courses among UK universities this year (up by 44% according to recent figures); a surge in interest from young women, particularly from the United States, has been credited as part of the 'Prince William effect'. Each major newspaper has bought property in the town, and the Art History Dept has been moved to more secure premises. Prince William may have broken with Royal Family protocol in choosing to study at St Andrews, but as a public school-educated Englishman, he will be in good company. Many who enrol are smarting from an Oxbridge rejection. The remoteness of the university is said to have pleased the prince's bodyguards, who will find their job more manageable than in a bustling city.
