Field Marshal Jan Christian SMUTS (African Boer general who fought against the British in the Boer War of 1899-1902). Born in 1870, died in 1950. Welcomed conciliation with the British after the Boer war, but remained a tenaciously patriotic South African. Was Prime Ministerfor 14 years, first from 1919-1924 when he was succeeded by Hertzog. In 1939 he was again Prime Minister after splitting with Hertzog over entering World War II. Under Smuts, South Africa sided with the Allies.
