Documentary Workshop in Hong Kong

June 7, 2017
by Chien-Chi Chang
Part of the Magnum 70th anniversary program in Hong Kong, this workshop, in collaboration with Asia One Communication Group, focuses on building a long-term documentary project,

Intended for photographers wishing to broaden their visual perspective and push the boundaries of their personal development, the workshop will elevate the professional standard of both local and international photographers, under the guidance of Magnum’s renowned, contemporary practitioner Chien-Chi Chang.

From September 29th to October 3rd, 2017, Chien-Chi Chang will lead an exclusive group through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to learn amongst peers. Candidates will develop their visual language and photographic identity, along with practical, technical and conceptual skills, and the expertise required to compete in a changing marketplace.

Participants will also be asked to approach a photographic story in Hong Kong and its surrounding area, either relating to previous works or interests, or exploring an opportunity to work under a new discipline. Magnum’s photographers will help students discover how they can improve their own photography and editing, rather than impose their own photographic style.

During the course of the Workshop, Chien-Chi Chang will lead a public talk at Fine Art Asia 2017 on October 2nd – More details on content and how to register to the talk to be published soon (Workshop’s participants will be automatically registered).

This program is organized thanks to the generous support of Asia One Communications Group, Boogie Woogie Photography and Fine Art Asia.

The event

"The workshop goal is to teach/guide a long-term documentary project and all the practices and processes behind it. In each long-term project, there is the research, the method, the motivation, the discipline, the fatigue, the fear of failure, the challenge and the renewed challenge. »

The intensive workshop is aimed for professionals and/or serious photography enthusiasts.

During the course of the workshop, participants are expected to photograph on a daily basis and be intensively critiqued daily. In addition, there will be visual exercises, editing exercises, and later audio and moving images will be introduced and incorporated to make multimedia for those who are interested in making multimedia. To recap, it is to define and sharpen one's own vision, heighten one's own story telling skill with one's own motivation and method."
Chien-Chi Chang

The event will take place at Asia One Communications Group, 13/F, Asia One Tower, 8 Fung Yip Street, Chai Wan, Hong Kong

Chien-Chi Chang

In his work, Chien-Chi Chang makes manifest the abstract concepts of alienation and connection. The Chain a collection of portraits made in a mental asylum in Taiwan, caused a sensation when it was shown at La Biennale di Venezia (2001) and the Bienal de Sao Paolo (2002). The life-sized photographs of pairs of patients literally chained together resonate with Chang’s jaundiced look at the less visible bonds of marriage. He has treated marital ties in two books—I do I do I do (2001), a collection of images depicting alienated grooms and brides in Taiwan, and in Double Happiness (2005), a brutal depiction of the business of selling brides in Vietnam.

The ties of family and of culture are also the themes of an ambitious project begun in 1992. For 20 years, Chang has photographed the bifurcated lives of Chinese immigrants in New York’s Chinatown, along with those of their wives and families back home in Fujian. A work in progress, China Town was hung at the National Museum of Singapore in 2008 as part of a mid-career survey, Doubleness.

Chang’s investigation of the ties that bind one person to another draws on his own deeply divided immigrant experience. Born in Taiwan in 1961, Chang studied at Soochow University (B.A. 1984) and at Indiana University (M.S. 1990). Chang joined Magnum in 1995 and became a full member in 2001.
