Bookmaking Masterclass in Paris with Patrick Zachmann and Xavier Barral

<b>Learn how to create a photobook and work with a publisher </b>

This masterclass offers immersion into the world of photobook making and into the relationship between photographer and publisher.

Led by Magnum Photographer Patrick Zachmann and the iconic publisher Xavier Barral, participants will take part in an educational workshop exploring the different processes behind the creation of a photography book, from the first steps of editing a project, the design of the book, creation of a dummy copy, how to pitch to publishers and approach distribution.

On the first day, the two tutors will speak about their work, career and the photo book industry. This will be followed by a group discussion about the books that Patrick and Xavier have worked on together (<i>Ma Proche Banlieue</i> and <i>So Long China</i>), allowing participants to see original design processes and documentation of the books.

The second day will be exclusively dedicated to the projects of the chosen candidates. Participants will have a chance to present their work to Patrick, Xavier and their peers for individual tution in a collaborative group setting.

The workshop will be held in French, in the Magnum Office in Paris.

<b>Day 1</b>

9:30 - Presentation of the Magnum office and the history of Magnum’s books
10:30-11:00 - Brief presentation of each participants project to the group
11:00-12:30 - Patrick Zachmann’s talk
12:30-14:00 - Lunch Break
14:00-15:30 - Xavier Barral’s talk
15:45-17:30 - Group Discussion based around books published by Xavier Barral and Patrick Zachmann.

<b>Day 2</b>

10:00-13:30 – 14:30-18:00 - Group review of participants portfolios and discussion around next steps and personal strategy.

18:00-19:30 - Wrapping drinks

<b>Bios</b>

<b>Patrick Zachmann</b>

Patrick Zachmann (b. 1955) has been a freelance photographer since 1976. He has dedicated himself to long-term projects on the cultural identity, memory and immigration of different communities. In 1989, his story on the events at Beijing's Tiananmen Square was widely published in the international press and his work was awarded the prestigious Prix Niepce. Zachmann’s published books include: Enquête d'Identité ou Un Juif à la recherche de sa mémoire (1987) and W., ou L'Œil d'un Long Nez (1995). Zachmann’s directed films include: the short film, La Mémoire de Mon Père (My Father's Memory) and the feature-length films Allers-retour: Journal d'un Photographe (Round trip: diary of a photographer) and Bar Centre des Autocars.

<b>Xavier Barral</b>

Éditions Xavier Barral publish books by contributors to the international art world since 2002. Each book is a unique object. The works of Josef Koudelka, Patrick Zachmann, Jane Evelyn Atwood, Martin Parr, Raymond Depardon, Jean Gaumy, Philippe Chancel, or those of Annette Messager, Sophie Calle, Daniel Buren, Thomas Hirschhorn, Fabienne Verdier, the stories of Pier Paolo Pasolini, or the worlds of David Lynch, William Kentridge or Watabe emerge as “book-objects” whose aesthetic, design and editorial choices take pride of place.

<b>Fees and Policies</b>

– You will be asked to submit a €100 application fee that will be credited towards your full tuition if you are accepted to the masterclass. If you are not accepted, your €100 fee will be returned minus a 5% processing charge.
– Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel this event with less than 6 participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 1-week advance notice.
– Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.
– For International applicants, Magnum Photos is not responsible for reimbursement of travel expenses in case the workshop is canceled. We highly recommend that you buy refundable tickets and/or travel insurance.
– Refunds to applicants who wish to cancel their place on the workshop can only be given up to 14 days in advance of the date of the workshop. After this point, refunds cannot be issued.
