The Exile of Evo Morales

June 30, 2020
by Moises Saman
Evo Morales, former President of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019 is well known for his leftist activism and his Movement for Socialism (MAS) party. He moved Bolivia towards a mixed economy and created relationships with governments in Latin America such as Cuba and Venezuela.
After his reelection in 2009 and 2014, his popularity quickly declined as he attempted to abolish presidential term limits. Political unrest ensued after the 2019 general elections. Various claims of electoral fraud led to a month of protests and marches from October to late November, with El Alto being the site of deadly clashes between supporters of Morales and security forces. Morales was forced to resign and fled to Mexico, where he was granted political asylum.
