David Alan Harvey: Jeju Haenyeo Exhibition
December 11, 2017
by David Alan Harvey
A Haenyeo is a woman diver who gathers products for a living, and Jeju is home to the largest number of them in Korea. The women have received a considerable amount of attention around the globe. The haenyeo symbolize Jeju women – with their unyielding spirit they played a leading role booting the Jeju economy by working all over the country. Jeju Haenyeo is intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and Magnum Photographer David Alan Harvey stayed in Jeju for about a month and continued to be inspired by haenyeo every day.
