Magnum Workshop Kyoto
22nd September – 26th September

Magnum Photos Tokyo is very pleased to announce its first international workshop in Kyoto in collaboration with Leica Store Kyoto.
This is a unique opportunity to produce new work in the beautiful and charming city that is Kyoto, under the guidance of well known Magnum photographer Jacob Aue Sobol.

Having lived in Japan for a year, Jacob Aue Sobol has a good knowledge of the country and its culture. After his Japanese experience, he produced a book in 2008 named “I, Tokyo”. This book was awarded by the Leica European publishers award in 2008, and has been translated in Italian, Dutch, Spanish, German, Greek and French.

Aimed at photographers wishing to broaden their perspectives and push the boundaries of their personal development, the Magnum Kyoto workshop will elevate the professional standard of both regional and international photographers. Participants will be expected to explore the city and shoot what interest them.

The workshop will take place in the marvelous Leica Store Kyoto situated in Gion, a district that is awash in tradition and status. The store is a 100-year-old two-story traditional townhouse.

Gion is the well-known district of the Geishas. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a geisha on her way to or from an engagement at a tea house in the evenings or running errands during the day.

This workshop is not about learning new technical skills, but rather improving each student's own unique photographic vision. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment, ready to work, and with a sufficient fluency in the English language, as this workshop will be taught in English.

Due to the fast pace of the workshop, Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. We also recommend participants to arrive with one realistic project idea they wish to develop during the workshop, and that preliminary research be conducted before the workshop begins.

The five day workshop, will lead a total of up to 13 International and Japanese participants through an intense program of shooting, critiquing and editing.

Participants will work will their tutor to create an edit to be shown in the culminating workshop projection the last day of the event, in the evening.
