Hamburg Triennial of Photography Masterclass and Workshop
March 6, 2015
by Magnum Photographers
On the occasion of the Hamburg Triennial of Photography, held from June 18th to June 28th, Magnum Photos is delighted to announce not one but two special events in Hamburg! A 5 day workshop with Antoine D’Agata and a 3 day masterclass with Mark Power.

Antoine D’Agata’s workshop will take place from June 16th to June 20th.
Mark Power’s masterclass will take place from June 18th to June 20th.

The Workshop

“No moral attitude, no judgment, just is needed the ethics of affirmation to explore some universe, sharing it until the end without any precautions.

A photographic act is in equilibrium, constantly questioned between photography as a documentary tool or a pure experience.

It's not how a photographer looks at the world that is important. It's their intimate relationship with it.”
- Antoine D’Agata

The Magnum Workshop with Antoine D’Agata is a five-day practice-focused photography workshop that will be held in Hamburg, from June 16th to June 20th. Antoine d’Agata will guide an intimate group of 12 participants who will have the opportunity to shoot and polish some new material and that will be encouraged to put a subject into perspective by mixing photographs and other elements.

Aimed at photographers with a good understanding of photographic practice, Antoine d’Agata will lead his group through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to develop a photographic project under his guidance. Candidates will spend the five days alongside the photographer developing visual language, photographic identity, practical, technical and conceptual skills and the expertise required to compete in a changing marketplace. This workshop will be especially focused on the creating of a new work.

The session will culminate in a projection of the students’ works.

The Masterclass

“Now that everyone in the developed world seems to own some form of camera, a different space has opened for documentary photographers. It's a space free from specific events, where there are different expectations, where it is first and foremost about ideas. Now we can all take pictures, with varying degrees of ability, it's what we DO with our cameras that count. ”

The Magnum masterclass with Mark Power is an intense three-day, from June 18th to 20th, 2015. Mark Power will lead an intimate group through a daily program of editing sessions, sequencing, reviews, group critiques and mentoring. This masterclass will give limited participants a rare opportunity to refine their photographic practice and sense of authorship.
- Mark Power

Intended for photographers or photography students with a good understanding of photographic practice, candidates will spend the three days alongside Mark Power developing visual language and photographic identity. The masterclass will be focused on editing, sequencing, theoretical and conceptual skills. Students will have the opportunity to refine and develop an existing body of work.

The Photographer Requirements

Workshop participants should be able to show a good level of photographic aptitude and to arrive with a solid project idea with at least one realistic project idea they wish to develop during the workshop, so that the mentoring can be most efficient. We strongly recommend that you try to plan your work as much as possible, collect contacts or spots, anything relevant for your own project. – Please refer to your teacher’s specific requirements.

Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph. The workshop is limited to just 12 participants and photographers will be subject to online applications.

On the first day participants will have the opportunity to present their existing work and discuss project ideas. The workshop structure is self-directed and participants will be responsible for their own coordination and time management. Candidates are encouraged to be realistic about what is achievable in five days.

Due to the fast pace of the workshop and the masterclass, Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. Lab services will be recommended.

Regarding the Masterclass participants are asked to come with an existing body of work.
