Magnum Workshop Tokyo 2016
December 25, 2015
16th March – 20th March 2016

Magnum Photos is pleased to announce its third international workshop in Tokyo in collaboration with the Nippon Photography Institute.

The workshop will be led by acclaimed Magnum photographers Harry Gruyaert, Jacob Aue Sobol and Matt Black.

This is a great opportunity to produce some new work in Tokyo, amongst some of the best tutors. Each of these tutors come from a different background and have a very unique vision.

Nippon Photography Institute (NPI) has more than 40 years of history, and has been producing influential members of the Japanese photographic world.
This has been realised through NPI’s fantastic lecturers, educational programming and offerings of high-quality equipment. ( http://www.npi.ac.jp/en/)

Address :4-16 Sakuragaoka-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0031 Japan.

The workshop is aimed at photographers with a good understanding of pho-tographic practice, who are interested in narrative and storytelling and looking to take the next step in their development. Each applicant will be able to choose the photographer they would like to work with and all efforts will be made to accom-modate their choice.

During these 5 days, each Magnum photographer will lead their groups through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to learn amongst and from their peers. Participants will work will their lead tutors to create an edit to be shown in the culminating workshop pro-jection. The projection will take place at The Nippon Photography Institute.

This workshop is not about learning new technical skills, but rather improving each student's own unique photographic vision. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment, ready to work, and with a sufficient fluency in the English language, as this workshop will be taught in English.

Due to the fast pace of the workshop, Magnum highly recommends that partici-pants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. We also recommend participants to arrive with one realistic project idea they wish to develop during the workshop, and that preliminary research should be conducted before the workshop begins.

The five day workshop, will lead a total of up to 13 International and Japanese par-ticipants through an intense program of shooting, critiquing and editing.
Participants will work with their tutor to create an edit to be shown in the culminat-ing workshop projection on the evening of the last day of the event.
