Battle for Mosul

August 9, 2017
by Peter van Agtmael
In October 2016 Iraqi and Peshmerga forces began an offensive to retake the major northern city of Mosul, which had been seized by ISIL in June 2014. They were met by serious resistance from ISIL, who would not be eliminated from the area until July, 2017. During nearly nine months of intense fighting civilians were caught in the middle resulting in thousands of noncombatant fatalities and one million being displaced.
In April 2017, Peter van Agtmael returned to Iraq to cover the ongoing fight for The New York Times Magazine.
