In the late 1960s a group of artists in Europe and the United States turned their backs on the commercial world of the art gallery and set out to make their presence felt in the landscape. Artists responded differently: some tweaking with the natural landscape, others constructing large scale interventions or engineered alterations to the landscape. This story looks at land art in Europe and its transition from a phenomenon replete with rebellious manifestos to its current status which is almost indistinguishable in many cases from either site-specific or site-related sculpture - art out of doors - of the sort Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth worked on long before the unofficial land art movement began.
