In 2017 Alex Majoli visited the unique, history-steeped island nation of Malta, which is developing into a popular holiday destination. Progressive, accessible, and inviting, Malta has become a trendy alternative to other often-overrun Mediterranean tourist destinations like Ibiza and Crete.

Malta’s main city, Valetta is one of two 2018 Capitol of Culture as designated by the European Commission. Though known for its medieval and Renaissance architecture, recent development has introduced modern structures to Valetta’s streets, namely architect Renzo Piano’s redesign of the city gate, parliament building and opera house.
