China, Too Fast

May 3, 2016
by Patrick Zachmann
On the occasion of the relase of Patrick Zachmann's new book “<a href='http://exb.fr/fr/home/268-so-long-china-9782365110938.html' target='_blank'>So long, China</a>" (Xavier Barral Editions), Magnum presents the photographer's latest feature : China, Too Fast.
This story, which was produced in Yunnan and in Sichuan in 2012 and 2015, features "intergenerational couples" – young 20-year olds and grandparents - in their family homes. It aims to show the struggles and cultural shocks one can observe within Chinese families today, results of a country who changed chaotically and rapidly, as well as the results of thirty five years of the one-child policy.
It’s a visual abstract of the fast evolutions China has seen over the past 30 years, which imply disorientation and forces one to reflect on the identity of China and of its inhabitants.
