PokemonGo Augmented Reality

Pokémon Go, a so called “augmented reality” game, has gone viral since it was released. Downloaded by more than 100 million people worldwide. This game allows players to go hunting virtual creatures, called Pokémon, everywhere. Thanks to its GPS tracking, player can locate and capture these colorful animated characters who appear on the screen of as if they were in the same real-world location as the player. Even though video games normally involve being cooped up at home, this time players hit the streets to chase Pokemon characters. While players consider Pokémon Go as an opportunity to socialize, others criticize various aspects of the game such as smartphone dependency and lack of safety on the streets. The application has also being criticized for using locations such as cemeteries and memorials as sites to catch Pokémon, raising consequently ethical questions.

Thomas Dworzak's pictures evoke the absurdity of players moving through space as in the french movie Last Year at Marienbad, in which truth and fiction are difficult to distinguish. During his work as a photojournalist, walking through the streets of Paris and visiting Normandie's war memorials, he discovered Pokestops in a number of historically ambiguous places.
